EQUIPMENT

This page is dedicated to helping you get the right gear for your player. Baseball is a sport of connection between player and equipment. One type of glove or bat may work perfectly for one player while not feeling right for another. Take time to help your kiddo find what works best for them.

Always be on the lookout for the Dick’s Sporting Good 20% off coupon that runs prior to each Spring and Fall season. The store in Torrance has a batting cage for your to try out bats for your player.

GLOVE

Arguably the most important piece of gear a baseball player can have. Here’s a quick break down of sizes of gloves to ages of player that you may find helpful.

4-5 years old: 10” - 10.5” size glove.

5-6 years old: 10.5” - 11.0” size glove

6-8 years old: 11.0” - 11.5” size glve

8+ years old: Typically start using 11” and above based the player.

Things to remember:

1. The best glove is the one that works and fits best for your child. Don’t get caught up by brand names or popularity.

2. Choose a glove that’s durable. Genuine leather works best.

3. For older players, consider positions played. Certain gloves are meant more for infield or outfield.

BAT

Picking the correct bat for your player can be tricky. Making sure you have the correct length and weight can impact their swing tremendously. Here are some things to consider.

  • Bat Drop. This is the difference between the bat’s weight and its length. Higher drops are better for younger players to provide better control.
  • Always check league rules before purchasing a bat. In WTLL, we adhere to the National Little League bat requirements that state:

      1. All bats must have an official USABat certification mark.
      2. The barrel of the baseball bat cannot exceed 2 5/8 inches. For Softball the diameter max is 2 1/4.
      3. Length cannot be more that 33 inches.

HELMET

Batting helmets must be worn by all batters and baserunners. Be sure the helmet has the symbol NOCSAE. Jaw guards or face masks can be used but are not required. Make sure the helmet fits snug to the players head and doesn’t wobble as they run or swing.
